Walter Launches New DD170 Supreme Solid Carbide Drill

With the Drivox·tec™ Solid Carbide Drill DD170 Supreme, Walter AG is introducing a new “holemaking icon” to the market. Like its well-known predecessor, the DC170 Supreme, the new DD170 Supreme is also designed as a top-tier solution for steel and cast iron — but now with some technical upgrades that stand out: most notably, the new Krato·tec™® multi-layer coating.

Walter has already used this coating successfully in other drill series. This ensures that Walter’s claim of a tool life increase of around 50% is dependable. The updated point geometry of the solid carbide drill also brings advantages: a larger clearance angle on the inner side compared to the outer side and a raised drill point enhance positioning accuracy, lower axial forces, and improve drilling quality.

The patented groove design has also been improved: a flatter entry towards the drill insert enhances process stability, especially when working with soft materials like mild steel, as it reduces material buildup. Along with refining the cutting profile, Walter has also increased the number of flutes. With twelve grooves instead of eight, the DD170 Supreme can now be reground more often, which greatly boosts both the tool’s service life and its sustainability.

According to Walter, its strong process reliability in challenging tasks like cross holes or angled exits, the high wear resistance of the Krato·tec® coating, and the excellent drilling results make the DD170 Supreme a new benchmark in solid carbide drilling. The Tübingen-based company offers this premium drill for high-volume and large-quantity drilling (up to 12 × Dc without pilot drilling) in diameters from Ø 3 to 20 mm, along with special tools available faster through Walter Xpress.
