New Belagavi facility strengthens India’s speciality materials supply chain for flame-retardant cables, EVs, and electrical infrastructure.
Hindalco Industries has commissioned India’s first greenfield Superfine Precipitated Aluminium Trihydrate (PPT ATH) manufacturing plant at Belagavi, Karnataka, marking a significant step in deepening the country’s speciality materials manufacturing capability.
Facility Overview
The new plant begins with an initial annual production capacity of 30,000 tonnes and has been designed for phased expansion to 60,000 tonnes as domestic demand grows. According to the company, the initial capacity is sufficient to meet nearly the entire domestic requirement for safer cable compounds from India’s wire and cable sector.
While the facility represents a capacity milestone, its greater significance lies in what it produces: a specialised material that underpins the safety and performance of several downstream industries.
A Material Behind the Materials
Superfine PPT ATH is a halogen-free flame-retardant material used in cables, electric vehicles, polymer insulators, thermal insulation, composites, and paints. In cable applications, it helps suppress flame propagation and smoke generation without releasing halogenated acid gases, a property increasingly critical as fire-safety standards tighten across electrical infrastructure, mobility, and industrial sectors.
The plant’s launch reflects a broader shift in India’s manufacturing priorities: from producing finished goods to building the specialised materials and inputs that make those goods safer and more capable.
Moving Up the Value Chain
India has established strong capabilities in aluminium and alumina production. The commissioning of this facility represents a move further up the value chain — from raw and refined materials toward speciality, application-specific products.
By expanding into Superfine PPT ATH, Hindalco is broadening its speciality alumina portfolio while addressing a specific technical requirement from downstream industries, supporting India’s progression toward more advanced, higher-value materials manufacturing.

The wire and cable industry is seen as a direct beneficiary, particularly as India’s BIS standard IS 17048:2018 for halogen-free flame-retardant (HFFR) cables provides a domestic standards framework for these applications. A stronger local supply of the underlying material is expected to support cable manufacturers in scaling products that meet these requirements.
The material’s relevance also extends to electric vehicles, where growing demands around electrical insulation, thermal management, and fire safety are increasing the importance of advanced material selection across the EV component ecosystem.
Built on Renewable Energy
Hindalco states that the Belagavi facility is the world’s only speciality alumina plant operating entirely on renewable energy, powered by biomass, solar, and wind. This adds a sustainability dimension to the investment, positioning the plant to meet the growing emphasis global customers place on carbon intensity and sustainable supply chains, an increasingly important factor for export-orientated manufacturers.
