The Ministry of Defence has signed a contract worth nearly ₹770 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to procure Improved Low-Level Light Weight Radars (LLLR-I).

The contract was signed in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the radar system can detect and track fighter-sized targets as well as mini and micro drones. It can also prioritise aerial targets, enhancing the Indian Army’s ability to counter threats from unmanned aerial systems (UAS).

The procurement is expected to strengthen India’s air defence capabilities while supporting domestic defence manufacturing. The Ministry said the initiative aligns with the Government’s vision of Viksit Bharat @2047 and marks a step towards greater indigenisation of air defence platforms.

The contract is also expected to support India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem and contribute to building a resilient, self-reliant and globally competitive defence industry.
