Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited (GSECL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) to explore the development of a proposed nuclear power project at Dhuvaran in Gujarat.

The project is expected to have a capacity of around 4,000 MW and could involve an investment of nearly ₹1 lakh crore. The agreement marks GSECL’s entry into the nuclear power sector and is aimed at strengthening Gujarat’s long-term electricity generation capacity and energy security.

The MoU was signed in the presence of Gujarat Energy Minister Rushikesh Patel, Principal Secretary of the Energy and Petrochemicals Department, GSECL Chairman Ashwini Kumar and NPCIL Chairman and Managing Director V. Rajesh.

Under the agreement, GSECL will assess land availability and supporting infrastructure at the proposed site, while NPCIL will conduct site surveys and technical studies and provide technical expertise. Further development of the project will depend on technical and economic feasibility as well as the required statutory approvals.

The proposed project could add around 4,000 MW to Gujarat’s power generation capacity and support industrial development and employment in the state. The nuclear capacity is also expected to complement Gujarat’s growing solar and wind power capacity by providing a continuous source of electricity.

NPCIL currently operates 24 commercial nuclear reactors with a combined installed capacity of 8,780 MW. The company also operates the Kakrapar Atomic Power Station in Gujarat.

The proposed Dhuvaran project comes as India expands its nuclear power programme and Gujarat seeks to diversify its power generation mix. If found feasible and approved, the project could become a major addition to the state’s long-term energy infrastructure.
