New Delhi, India – August 23, 2026
Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal will lead a 200-member business delegation to Japan for a four-day visit from August 24 to 27, described by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry as India’s largest-ever business delegation to the country. Goyal arrived in Japan at Haneda Airport to begin the visit, according to a statement from the Embassy of India in Japan.
The delegation spans sectors including manufacturing, semiconductors, clean energy, steel, automotive, financial services, healthcare and start-ups, and will travel across Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka. The Ministry said the visit “reflects the scale of ambition both nations bring to their Special Strategic and Global Partnership” and comes as India and Japan look to significantly deepen trade and investment ties.
Itinerary
Tokyo: Goyal will hold a series of meetings with top leadership of major Japanese conglomerates and industrial houses, alongside a round-table with Keidanren (Japan Business Federation), the apex body representing more than 1,500 leading Japanese companies. Dedicated sessions will focus on semiconductors, artificial intelligence, start-ups and discussions with foreign institutional investors. Goyal is also scheduled to hold bilateral discussions with Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Akazawa Ryosei, and will call on senior members of the Japanese government and parliament.
Nagoya: Described as the industrial heartland of Central Japan, Goyal will lead a business roadshow with Chukeiren (Central Japan Economic Federation) and the Nagoya Chamber of Commerce & Industry, engaging with Aichi Prefecture leadership and major manufacturing investors in the automotive and steel sectors.
Osaka: The visit concludes with an Investors and Business Roadshow, alongside meetings with leading Japanese companies across electronics, industrial and consumer sectors, aimed at showcasing opportunities in India’s manufacturing, clean energy and consumer markets.
The delegation is expected to hold at least 200 B2B meetings, alongside networking sessions and around 15 site visits, with Memoranda of Understanding expected to be signed, particularly in semiconductor and electronics cooperation.
Statement
FICCI Director General Jyoti Vij said the business delegation includes representatives “ranging from manufacturing, semiconductors, clean energy and steel to automotive, financial services, healthcare and start-ups,” and that discussions with the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), Japanese business organisations and investors would focus on opportunities for Japanese companies in India and ways to facilitate greater two-way investment. Vij added that high-technology sectors such as semiconductors and electronics are expected to be among the key areas of expanded cooperation.
Context
The visit comes roughly a year after Japan set an investment target of 10 trillion yen (approximately ₹60,000 crore) in India over a decade. Japan has been among India’s most significant sources of foreign investment, with FDI from Japan exceeding $43 billion between 2000 and 2024, and more than 1,400 Japanese companies currently operating in India. The 2011 India-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) has underpinned much of this bilateral trade growth, with Japanese participation visible in major infrastructure projects including the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor and metro systems in Delhi, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Chennai.
The visit also follows a separate high-level delegation, led by Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, which arrived in Tokyo the same week to pursue state-specific investment in digital infrastructure and technology-driven sectors, reflecting a broader wave of India-Japan engagement running concurrently at both the national and state levels.
