The government has launched three indigenous artificial intelligence (AI) foundational models, Eka-1 developed by Soket Labs, and Dhīr 2B and Dhīr 5B developed by ZenteiQ, marking a step towards strengthening India’s domestic AI ecosystem.
Speaking at the launch, S. Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), said the public release of these models was an important development in building a strong and strategic AI ecosystem in the country.
He highlighted their potential applications in areas such as cybersecurity, productivity enhancement and operational efficiency. He also noted that the models can operate in air-gapped environments, creating opportunities for secure AI deployment across enterprises and sensitive sectors.
Eka-1 is a foundational AI model with 26.3 billion parameters, trained on approximately 7.5 trillion tokens. It supports all 22 scheduled Indian languages, along with English, and is designed to handle applications involving mathematics, coding, reasoning and agentic AI.
Meanwhile, Dhīr 2B and Dhīr 5B are designed for offline-capable, document-based automation and knowledge retrieval. Their applications include citizen and enterprise services across defence, government, industrial and educational sectors, particularly in low-connectivity and sensitive environments.
The launch highlights efforts to develop indigenous AI capabilities that can address India’s multilingual requirements while supporting secure AI adoption across critical sectors.
