India’s First Indigenous Bullet Train Design Ready, B28 Prototype Expected Early Next Year

India’s first indigenous bullet train design is ready, with manufacturing progressing at a fast pace, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said. The first prototype of the high-speed trainset is expected to roll out early next year.

Speaking to the media in Bengaluru after inspecting the high-speed trainset models and systems at BEML, the minister said the indigenous B28 train has reached an important development milestone. The train is being developed for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor and other high-speed rail corridors planned in the future.

The propulsion system, electronics and bogies, which play a critical role in train stability and ride quality, are being manufactured in line with international standards. Vaishnaw said various components and systems are undergoing testing to assess their efficiency, performance and safety.

Explaining the technical challenges involved in developing high-speed trains, the minister said that trains operating at speeds of 280 to 350 kmph experience significant atmospheric pressure forces. Therefore, the welding processes, materials, manufacturing methods and integrated systems undergo stringent testing, including pressure tests, to ensure structural strength and prevent deformation.

Vaishnaw expressed confidence that the B28 high-speed train, being developed by a BEML-led consortium, would meet international standards.

The development marks a step forward in India’s efforts to build indigenous high-speed rail technology and strengthen domestic capabilities in advanced railway manufacturing.
