India and Russia are holding discussions to strengthen and expand cooperation in the energy sector, with nuclear energy forming part of the longstanding partnership between the two countries, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on September 15.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described energy cooperation as an important pillar of the India-Russia partnership and highlighted the Kudankulam nuclear power project as an example of bilateral collaboration. Technical teams from both sides are currently engaged in consultations on various aspects of energy cooperation.
The comments came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin met on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 11. The two leaders reviewed bilateral cooperation across areas including trade, energy, defence, space and people-to-people ties.
Putin also invited Modi to Russia for the 24th India-Russia Annual Summit. Modi accepted the invitation, with the dates to be finalised through diplomatic channels.
The MEA said the two countries intend to continue engagement on strengthening their Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership, including through discussions on energy cooperation.
