India will require an estimated $220 billion in investment between FY27 and FY30 to support its green energy transition, covering renewable power generation, transmission infrastructure, energy storage, green hydrogen and domestic manufacturing, according to Santosh Sarangi, Secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
Solar power is expected to account for the largest share of the investment requirement, at $70-75 billion, followed by transmission infrastructure at $40-45 billion and wind energy at $25-30 billion. Green hydrogen is projected to require $20-25 billion, while energy storage and manufacturing will each need $15-20 billion. Hydropower investment is estimated at $12-15 billion, while bioenergy will require $3-5 billion.
The investment drive comes as India works towards its target of achieving 500 GW of installed non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. The country currently has 308 GW of installed non-fossil fuel capacity, accounting for more than half of its total installed electricity capacity.
Sarangi said India attracted $63.7 billion in investment in the renewable energy sector between July 2024 and June 2026, including $6.2 billion in foreign direct investment. Government spending on renewable energy during the same period stood at $6.05 billion, which helped leverage significantly higher investment from private companies.
The summit, organised by the MNRE, will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Bharat Mandapam on November 2. Under the theme “Invest. Innovate. Inspire.”, the event is expected to bring together participants from more than 130 countries and over 400 renewable energy exhibitors. Australia, Denmark, the European Union, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom will participate as country partners.
The event will be held alongside the ninth session of the International Solar Alliance Assembly and the fourth International Conference on Green Hydrogen. Discussions will focus on clean energy financing, emerging technologies, manufacturing, energy storage and international cooperation.
Thirteen states and Union Territories will also showcase their renewable energy potential and investment opportunities. The summit will facilitate business-to-business, business-to-government and government-to-government engagements to connect investors, manufacturers and technology providers with projects across India’s renewable energy value chain.
