IIT Guwahati, Tata Electronics Sign MoU for Semiconductor Research

The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tata Electronics Private Limited to strengthen education, skill development and research in semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) in India.

As part of the collaboration, a Centre of Excellence (CoE) will be established at the IIT Guwahati campus to develop industry-ready talent and advance research in semiconductor packaging technologies.

The partnership will focus on developing education and training programmes aligned with industry requirements to address the growing demand for skilled professionals in the semiconductor sector. It will also support the development of the semiconductor talent ecosystem in Assam and the Northeast region by creating opportunities for students from engineering colleges, polytechnics and other educational institutions.

The initiative is expected to strengthen industry-academia collaboration and contribute to building India’s skilled workforce for the growing semiconductor industry.

The MoU was formalised between Prof. Rohit Sinha, Dean, R&D, IIT Guwahati, and Mr. Ranjan Bandyopadhyay, Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO), Tata Electronics Pvt. Ltd., at the IIT Guwahati campus. Other dignitaries present during the MoU signing event included Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director, IIT, Guwahati, Prof. Sukumar Nandi, Dean, Administration, IIT Guwahati, Ms. Vaswati Sarma Borthakur, Tata Electronics, Mr. Erwin Estepa and Mr. J M Nowful.

Under this framework, IIT Guwahati will be responsible for leading the development and delivery of education programs. These will include diploma-level training and B.Tech. level engineering programs in semiconductor ATMP. These programs will also include practical, hands-on training as a part of the curriculum.

In addition to the establishment of a Centre of Excellence at IIT Guwahati, the collaboration will enable:

  • Identification of engineering colleges, universities and polytechnics to expand access to semiconductor-focused education and training.
  • Providing hands-on training opportunities to students from partner engineering colleges, polytechnics and other educational institutions.
  • Jointly developing industry-relevant course content, educational resources and specialised training programs.
  • Training faculty members from participating educational institutions to strengthen semiconductor-related teaching capabilities.
  • Training opportunities for students at Tata Electronics.
  • Opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate students for collaborative research in semiconductor packaging, assembly, testing and related technologies.

Speaking about the collaboration with Tata Electronics Pvt. Ltd., Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director, IIT Guwahati, said, “This initiative aims to connect academic institutions, industry and students through specialised education, practical training and collaborative research. By identifying relevant institutions across Assam and supporting the development of semiconductor-focused curricula, the collaboration will broaden access to specialised technical education and strengthen the regional talent pipeline.”

This collaboration between IIT Guwahati and Tata Electronics Pvt. Ltd. marks a major milestone towards making India a global leader in semiconductor technology and workforce development.
